With COVID-19 related matters being the dominant theme, most boards probably have their agendas filled with urgent, operational matters more than usual. While issues of health and safety, enrollment (when are the kids coming back?) and visas can’t be ignored, neither can the primary purpose of a school board: TO ENSURE THE LONG-TERM HEALTH OF THE SCHOOL. Basically, the Board’s job is to look after tomorrows school while the Director looks after the school today.
Operating in an uncertain environment with little predictability is unbelievably challenging. AISA schools have always worked in challenging situations and somehow persevered. Balancing the short and long-term needs of the school is best done in partnership with the school director.
To the unsung men and women comprising numerous school boards, you have your work cut out for you and I salute you.
The Association of International Schools in Africa is dedicated to serving its members throughout Africa during this challenging time. Please let us know if you require additional or specific information, resources and or support, and we will endeavour to assist you as soon as possible.
